My Novice station was a Radio Shack HTX-100, 25 watt 10 Meter SSB/CW rig with a 10 Amp PS.  The HTX-100 was feeding a Radio Shack 102 inch stainless steel whip, trimmed for 10 Meters, and mounted on the roof of my shed.  I worked all over with this little rig, but that was late 1990, early 1991, and the solar cycle was still pretty high. After I got my General class license in early 1991, a friend loaned me his spare Drake TR-4, and I used that for almost a year, until he moved.  After that, I was back on sea duty (Navy), and didn't need a rig.  I didn't get back on HF until 1997, when I moved down to Florida....

I started with an Ameco AC-1 xmtr, with a hand-rolled coil for 40 meters and 2 or 3 xtals for transmit, and a Lafayette GC receiver.  I shortly thereafter moved up to a Johnson Ranger II and a Hammerlund HQ-110.  This was back in ...

I used to oversee a local ARES group in 1999-2001; I also helped organize and operate a storm spotters group. I had to get out of both due to serious political issues within those groups. I highly doubt I will ever participate in one ever again.
